chance to play at Newport Folk Fest...?!
i don't know how much of a corporate deal this is, probably pretty big since i went to the festival a couple years ago and it is now the Dunkin Donuts Newport Folk Festival. but i saw ray lamontagne, bright eyes, richard thompson and some other great acts there. and probably to combat their own corporateness, they have side stages now with less mainstream acts. anyway! my friend just forwarded this to me and it sounds like it might be a pretty cool opportunity. as their headline says, Dylan Played Here...

This year’s festival runs August 1st - 3rd, 2008, and we’ve got four performance slots for OurStage artists.

bleh! There's no beer at the Newport Folk Festival. See my review of the Somerville Theater to see how I feel about that.

Nope dry as the sahara.. Seriously, they will rifle through your cooler and take all your adult beverages. I think we made it till about 2PM before we roasted like some chestnuts in an open fire. Felt like I was the main course in a lobster bake. Thirsty as heck too! It's too bad we only had about an hour to kill before the wood brothers came on. The walk to the car is a long one.. if you go, take the bus.. Good thing Keller came on first thing, he was fantastic.

RE: chance to play at Newport Folk Fest...?!
The Newport Folk Festival fell on hard times in the later 1960s, even closing its doors for a number of years, beginning in 1971, but was revived in 1985, and has since become one of the major folk music festivals in the United States, alongside the Philadelphia Folk Festival, which began in 1960 and is now the longest continual running music festival in North America, and the Kerrville Folk Festival which began in 1972.

The Newport festival has run without interruption ever since 1985, although in a different form from its 1960s heyday; the event has gone from not-for-profit to for-profit, the crowd has shrunk from 20,000 to 10,000 and evening concerts have been canceled.
